Invitation to Join: Rubin-Euclid Derived Data Products Discussion Forum

Invitation to all Rubin Observatory LSST data rights holders to participate in the definition of Rubin-Euclid Derived Data Products”

Short version: We invite you to join the discussion of Rubin-Euclid Derived Data Products at the Rubin-Euclid Derived Data Products Forum.

Rubin Euclid Derived Data Products Working Group (DDP-WG)

Both the Rubin and Euclid science communities will benefit from joint survey processing at the pixel level of the Rubin and Euclid datasets to produce “Derived Data Products” (DDP). To realize this goal, the Rubin and Euclid management established a joint DDP working group in 2020.

The DDP-WG charter charges the DDP-WG with organizing a virtual or in-person workshop open to interested Rubin and Euclid data rights holders with the aim of gathering community input into the desired initial DDPs.

The current worldwide pandemic has impacted our capacity to move swiftly on the charge. Considering the situation, we presented to the management an alternative plan to achieve the same outcome, which they approved. We know you all suffer from Zoom fatigue, hence we propose a novel approach, which aims to engage the maximum number of Rubin and Euclid people in the most efficient manner to still achieve the goals of the charge. Our main motivation for this alternative approach was to minimize the disruption to peoples’ lives, and at the same time provide everyone with a maximum of flexibility and a minimum of stress in participating.

The new approach is based on a virtual continuous and asynchronous discussion spread over four to five months (January to May) via a standalone open forum dedicated to the Rubin-Euclid Derived Data Products. This approach ensures that each and every one of you has a chance to contribute to the discussion. Contributions are expected to be mostly written exchanges but can also include recording of talks during virtual Zoom meetings on specific topics that naturally spawn from the discussion.

At the end of this period, the DDP working group will produce a first draft of the report for the management by summer 2021, and will organize, if needed, a virtual face-to-face meeting over 2-3 days open to all, to summarise the draft by topics and finalise the initial recommendations.

The 26 members of the DDP working group will each play the role of instigator and moderator in their areas of expertise, triggering new topics and encouraging scientists to engage the whole collaboration; everyone is encouraged to contribute and start new topics! The focus must however remain the science: this is not yet the time to discuss how, where, or when the DDPs will be generated. Now is the time to discuss which shared DDP would best benefit science in general.

The DDP Discussion Forum

The Rubin-Euclid Derived Data Products Forum is based on the Discourse platform and modelled on the successful LSST community forum. We invite you to register and start engaging in discussions today. To keep the forum limited to our large scientific collaboration and keep spammers at bay, please use the passcode announced on the internal LSST slack (#announce-everyone), or contact @leanne.

Discourse will propose a username based on your email (all in lowercase), which you are free to adjust to your liking. We recommend using your full name; remember this is the primary username by which you will be identified. Please be sure in any case to put your full name on your profile along with your respective project affiliation in parenthesis, e.g. “Leanne Guy (Rubin)”. If you are in both Rubin and Euclid, consider putting Rubin/Euclid or Euclid/Rubin depending on your priorities. Finally, a profile photo is a nice addition to help us to get to know each other.

Please take a moment to get acquainted with the options the Discourse platform offers in your profile settings, and take note of the code of conduct in particular.

Finally, before you engage in the discussion, we strongly advise taking the time to explore the 6 short topics listed in the Overview section (Charter, DDP definition, Timeline, Discourse introduction, Discussion categories, DDP Working Group membership): this “read me first” section will help you to orient yourself in the conversation.

We thank you in advance for your engagement over the coming months and we look forward to meeting you on the forum.

The signup form wants an “Invite Code” (“Account registration requires an invite code”). How does one go about getting this?

Cheers,
jim

Thanks Jim. I updated the original announcement to answer your question.
