RTN-011 v4.0: Rubin plans for an Early Science Program

A new version, v4.0, of technote RTN-011, “Rubin Observatory Plans for an Early Science Program,” has been issued and is available at https://rtn-011.lsst.io . V4.0 includes updates to the timeline for Early Science following the construction project’s schedule workshop in April 2023.

Hi all,

Maybe I missed this in the Early Science Program documents but I’m trying to find out the sky coverage and depths for DP1 and DP2? Also, is DP2 going to include photoz estimates? Thanks.

A new version, v5.0, of technote RTN-011, “Rubin Observatory Plans for an Early Science Program,” has been issued and is available at https://rtn-011.lsst.io . V5.0 includes updates to the timeline for Early Science following the construction project’s schedule workshop in October 2023.

Hi @ilin , thanks for your question. The sky coverage and depths are still TBD. Briefly, DP1 is expected to be based only on a few nights of data (so it will be shallow). DP2 is expected to be based on more extensive commissioning data, which would include science validation surveys.

Fig 2 of RTN-011 clarifies what the commissioning-era surveys might include (e.g., smaller regions of 10-20 year equivalent depth; moderate regions with dense temporal sampling; and wide, shallow regions). Details of the plans for commissioning observations will be made available as those plans converge. I’d say that DP2 probably won’t include photometric redshifts at the time of its release, but there is a team working towards creating such a data product.
