Hi,
I have a question about the DP1 data policy. Are data right holders allowed to share with non-data right holders tools that were created/trained based on DP1 data? I mean tools like e.g. a photometric redshift estimator that can be used on any object (i.e. not restricted to Rubin data) and was trained using multiwavelength datapoints from DP1 ObjectId’s.
I’m not sure if this is covered in RDO-013 or Data Policy | Rubin Observatory as this would be a “derived tool product” instead of a derived data product.
Thanks in advance,
Hi @ale_munozarancibia, yes absolutely, derived data products and related tools are shareable. As long as the tool “cannot be used to recreate any proprietary LSST data product(s)”, DPOL-601 applies and the tool can be shared, just like a derived data product.

Thanks a lot @MelissaGraham! From this I get that it’s also safe to publish the results of using such a tool in public data (e.g. the future LSST stream), as DPOL-601 would apply too.
Yes.
For example, if a broker trained a photometric classifier on proprietary LSST data and then ran it on alerts, the resulting classifications for alerts could be publicly shared.
