RSP Portal Tutorials

I’ve gone through all of the RSP Portal Tutorials available as of June 9th, and Ian Sullivan suggested I take note of any issues or points of confusion and share them here.

101.4 - Step 2:

  • “Edit ADQL” not visible upon loading the portal. Later tutorials specify navigating to the DP1 Images or Catalogs tab, but this first introduction of the ADQL Query box doesn’t.
  • This is the first introduction of the search button, specify that it’s on the bottom left of the screen, it’s explained in 102.1 step 8.

102.1 - Step 3 and 102.3 - Step 3:

  • Reword to include something along the lines of “or click the question marks”. Mouse-over doesn’t work on some parts of the page, including Enter Constraints and the table dropdown menus.

103.2 - Intro to ADQL

  • The IVOA page on ADQL that’s linked in the tutorial looks visually identical to the version found on IOVA documents, including being the correct version, but the URL is different and the links to html, pdf, and tex formats of the document are broken. The same URL is provided in 104.2.

104.1 - Step 2:

  • Change wording from “clear ‘Search’” to “click ‘Search’”.
    Step 4:
  • There’s no “A” labeled in Figure 2.
    Step 5:
  • The layout options shown in Figure 2 and described in Step 4 are outdated as they do not include “images”
    Step 8:
  • Introduce deleting unwanted query results earlier. The coverage chart looks very different having gone through all previous tutorial steps than the image shown in Figures 1 and 2.

104.2 - Step 4:

  • There is no “L” labeled in Figure 1

General:

  • The tutorials are well thought out and easy to follow.
  • Is the RSP Portal designed to be usable in split screen? The pop-up panel for Results - Coverage - Image Center Drop Down: Center Images cuts off in split screen mode in an unusable manner. I anticipate that most people going through these tutorials on a laptop or with a single monitor will want to use split screen to see the tutorial and the RSP portal at the same time.
  • In split screen the expanded coverage, image, chart, and table panels don’t fir well, as they take up more than half of the screen regardless of the actual size of the content.
  • It would also be nice to have a Results Layout which places Coverages/Images/Charts on the top, and tables on the bottom of the screen.
  • I appreciate that the expected number of images/rows is given.

Thanks @otho , I’ve created an internal work ticket to consider this and implement these fixes (SP-2419).
