Invitation to Join: Photo-z Virtual Forums

The Rubin Observatory Data Management (DM) team seeks input from the science community regarding which photo-z estimator(s) should be adopted to generate photometric redshifts for the LSST Data Release (DR) Object catalog. Community input is a crucially necessary element of the DM team’s roadmap towards photo-z for the DRs. This roadmap can be found in full in DMTN-049 and is summarized in the topic A Roadmap to Photometric Redshifts for LSST Data Releases.

Forum Goals: To facilitate the photo-z related discussion across the Rubin community, including the Science Collaborations and International Programs, the DM team will host a series of monthly “Photo-z Virtual Forums” in two sets. The first set (Feb-Apr) will focus on defining the criteria to be used to evaluate photo-z estimators. The second set (May-Aug) will support the community’s efforts to prepare Letters of Recommendation for photo-z estimators, e.g., Q&A with DM staff, opportunities for community members to collaborate on or co-sign letters. Topics such as the role of proposed in-kind contributions related to photo-z, schemas for inputs and outputs, training and calibration, scientific use-cases, validation and implementations can also be discussed.

Forum Format: All sessions in a given set will be the same, and will occur at a range of days and times so that hopefully everyone worldwide can participate in at least one session. Sessions will start with a ~10 minute introduction to the photo-z roadmap in DMTN-049 , and then proceed into a ~40 minute facilitated discussion. Everyone is welcome to attend one or more sessions. Attendance in previous sessions is not required, and advance reading of DMTN-049 is not necessary.

The call for Letters of Recommendation from the community regarding their photo-z science needs and which existing photo-z estimators might best serve them – which is the main topic for the second set of these LSST PZ Virtual Forums – is now posted:

Here is the slide deck we’ll be using for Set 2. Hope you can join us!
